One of the central questions of our time revolves around the dangers of artificial intelligence. Is it a cause for legitimate concern? Should we put the legislative brakes on? Or is it hype? What about AI’s revolutionary potential? Isn’t that a cause for celebration?
Stephen West has three great free episodes on AI on Spotify that delve into the philosophical implications of these questions. His podcast is called “Philosophize This.” He is bright, insightful, and quite funny to boot!
Here they are in order:
Episode 184: “Is Artificial Intelligence really an existential risk?” A balanced philosophical discussion of this question sets up the episodes to follow. https://open.spotify.com/episode/6DITqGqR7SJYNoJhtGbm18
Episode 185: “Should we prepare for an AI revolution?” The revolutionary potential of generative AI is discussed in depth. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2t7HUGTGc8ACkpHw0bkRcg
Episode 186: “Are we heading for a digital prison? The Panopticon–Foucault, Bentham, and Cave” A discussion on the historical role of intelligence as a justification for dominance. and the anatomy of free will and how a digital world may impact us in ways without knowing it. https://open.spotify.com/episode/4CFeJzgnvPZIC6Qt4c2TaZ
We must continue to have the crucial discussion regarding the dangers of artificial intelligence. We can’t predict how powerful AI will become, and as history has taught us, we must always be vigilant with new technology. I think it best not to let our fears win out. We must seek the balance and that balance must always be maintained through analysis, debate, and reappraisal. AI’s benefits already astonish in the fields of medicine, biotech, and climate science, and it is a powerful ally in expanding and evolving human awareness, as nothing in the past has done so efficiently, and might even hold the key to sustaining humanity.
